St. Lawrence NYSARC Employee Honored as "Outstanding Performer" by NYSID

Kent Truax

In honor of October's National Disability Employment Awareness Month, St. Lawrence NYSARC (www.slnysarc.org), announced that employee Kent Truax of Ogdensburg was awarded as an "Outstanding Performer" by New York State Industries for the Disabled, Inc. (NYSID.)

St. Lawrence NYSARC is proud to recognize Truax, who has worked as part of the Agency's Seaway Industries Mobile Crew at various locations including Hamilton Hall at St. Lawrence Psychiatric Center as a custodian for three years.

NYSID's Joslin Award Program honors people with disabilities whose work on NYSID contracts is outstanding.  Truax is one of the forty people state-wide who is being honored for his personal success through employment on a NYSID preferred source contract.

This recognition comes in conjunction with October's National Disability Awareness Month, a federally mandated designation that calls attention to the issues people with disabilities face, including improving employment opportunities, accommodation, transportation, and expanding services.

For 36 years, Lawrence NYSARC has made it a priority to help employers realize that people with disabilities are a vital part of the workforce.  Through various programs, the Agency teaches people the daily living, job and social skills needed to manage successfully at home and in the community.

Today, St. Lawrence NYSARC's facility-based and supported work services are providing employment services to more than 290 people with disabilities.  To learn more about employment programs for people with disabilities or to get information on National Disability Employment Awareness Month, contact St. Lawrence NYSARC at 315-379-9531.

St. Lawrence NYSARC exists as a non-profit membership association to provide services in the community for persons with mental retardation and other developmental disabilities. Our mission is to enable individuals and their families an opportunity to achieve self-determined goals in
partnership with this Agency.
