FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – St. Lawrence NYSARC, a private, non-profit organization committed to maximizing the potential of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities, received a $12,500 grant to increase recreational options. The funds were used to give 75 people with disabilities educational and fun choices for leisure activities.

The young adults in the Transitions program adventured into Albany and Lake George for a Summer excursion.  They went to the Albany Concourse, toured the Capitol building, visited Six Flags Great Escape, shopped at the mall in Plattsburgh, and stayed in two different hotels.

The Saturday Club utilized the Recreational grant funds for two separate groups and travelled to Thompson Park Zoo, Watertown Arcade, Behlings Orchards, and Lowville Cream Cheese Festival, among others. People also went to the Adirondacks to take a gondola ride on White Face Mountain, tour The Wild Center, and see “Shrek the Musical.”

Both groups took full advantage of the wealth of local recreational activities in the North County including beaches, restaurants, haunted hay rides, hockey, swimming, bowling, snow shoeing, sledding, movies, etc.

An additional 20 actors and dancers with developmental disabilities performed in, “A Night of Culture and Creativity,” thanks in large part to the NYSARC Recreational Grant.  The event featured a variety of family-friendly acts including dramatic and comedic scenes, as well as a dance showcase.

The Trustees of the NYSARC, Inc. Trust approved a remainder fund grant of $12,500 per chapter to provide recreational opportunities for people they support.  Last year the Chapter received a similar grant from NYSARC Trust Services. NYSARC Trust Services administers supplemental needs trusts that enable people with disabilities to remain in their home and community while retaining Medicaid services and other government benefits.  Information is available on the NYSARC Trust Services at , phone 1-518-439-8323, toll free phone 1-800-735-8924 or e-mail
