St. Lawrence NYSARC, a private, non-profit corporation dedicated to working for and with people with intellectual and developmental disabilities, announced that tickets are now available for The 4th Annual Arts Showcase which will be held on Saturday, May 10, 2008 at 7:00 p.m. at SUNY Potsdam's College Theatre.  The Showcase features work by 20 participants in the Community Arts Program, and features 10 ultra-condensed Shakespearean plays, live guitar and piano music, tap and jazz dance; as well as a display of fine art work.

The Community Arts Program was established in 2005 to give people with disabilities the opportunity to explore interests in the cultural arts.  Individuals involved in the program practice their craft year-round with bi-weekly workshops taught by professionals in each artistic field.  Workshops include traditional acting techniques, guitar, jazz and tap dance, and visual arts mediums including photography, oil paint, watercolor, jewelry, and sculpture.

The Community Arts Program is the only service in St. Lawrence County that focuses solely on artists and performing artists with disabilities.  The actors are the stars of their production.  They memorize their lines and rehearse their roles.  Each Arts Showcase is a family-friendly event that runs about an hour and a half.  The visual artists' display features original work including: paintings, sculpture, pottery, jewelry, photography, and more.

The Community Players will also be performing at the Canadian American Developmental Disabilities International Expertise Exchange scheduled for May 14 and 15, 2008 at the Hilton Resort in Lake Placid, N.Y. The Can-Am, which is sponsored by 1 World Foundation, is an educational program for people who work in the developmental disability field. Professionals from both Canada and the United States meet to share ideas and develop strategies to improve the lives of the individuals they serve.

Tickets for The 4th Annual Arts Showcase cost $3.00 for adults, $2.00 for students, and children five and under are free. For more information, please call Michelle Quinell at (315) 386-3529 or email mquinell@slnysarc.org.
